RESCHEDULED: Community Forum on School Boundary Changes in East Salem

posted Jan 12, 2012 2:22 PM by Salem Keizer   [ updated Jan 19, 2012 4:31 PM ]

A new elementary school is scheduled to open in East Salem in Fall 2012. The school is being built on Walker Road NE near Cordon Road and Sunnyview Road. Attendance area boundaries are being adjusted to create an attendance neighborhood for the new school, and to balance enrollments and relieve overcrowding at existing schools.

A community forum is being held to give the public the opportunity to view proposed changes and provide feedback.

Monday, January 23, 2012
6:00 p.m. at McKay High School

The boundary changes will create an attendance area for the new school, and adjust attendance areas for Hazel Green, Hoover, Middle Grove, Miller, Scott, Swegle and Auburn elementary schools. The changes could also affect the middle and high school assignments for students who live in these elementary school attendance areas.

More information about the boundary change forum is available on the district website at www.salemkeizer.org, or by calling project coordinator Mike Bednarek at 503-399-3290.

Funding for the construction of the new school is provided by the $242.1 million bond measure passed by voters in 2008. Bond funds can only be used for new school construction, repairs and renovations, and cannot be used for school operations.

Bond-funded construction of two new elementary schools continues on schedule, and the process to determine school names continues this month with public meetings.

Middle Grove is a Kindergarten through fifth-grade school with an enrollment that averages around 300 students. Bilingual services are available. Our nickname is the Cougars.

Middle Grove was built in 1947 and got its name because it stood in the middle of a grove of fir trees.
